Our DNA

X of Xavier

Doctor X was founded in 2018 by brothers Jom and Thomas Luiten. Jom spent years at Eindhoven University of Technology developing ultrafast electron techniques - building instruments that didn’t exist yet. With results came demand for his custom-built instruments.

Thomas recognized the potential and saw how these techniques could be developed into instruments that scientists can actually use. Together, they founded Doctor X with full accountability, direct relationships with customers, and the freedom to build for the long term.

The name honors their grandfather Xavier Wolters. By day Xavier taught Latin and Greek at a lyceum. By night he crafted replica antique clocks on a lathe and his own milling machine. He completed a PhD in classical philology, co-founded the Eindhoven Weather and Astronomy Society, built his own telescopes, and wrote books on clockmaking.

His business card read "Dr. X" - a lighthearted reference to his doctorate and first initial. He used it, we believe, with pride and mischief.

Xavier’s principles still guide us: work across boundaries when challenges demand it, approach every project with precision and curiosity, and never settle for less than proper.

How We Work

Doctor X operates from the idea that fundamental discoveries happen when instruments give access to new worlds. The goal is to enable; Doctor X makes new research possible for others.

We approach challenges as a laboratory. Ideas are developed through making, testing, refining, and sometimes discarding. Professionalization serves trust and durability. Independence protects long-term thinking. Every instrument is built for durability. Most of development focuses on turning concepts into reliable products that can survive years of daily use. Every design decision assumes someone will depend on this equipment late at night, under deadline pressure, when funding and research timelines are at stake.

Careers

Doctor X has no open positions at this time. We are always interested in meeting engineers, physicists, and technicians who could contribute to our work. If that describes you, reach out.
